Week 7 Glaciers, Penguins, and Cape Horn

Even though we had quite a few days at sea it was a busy and fun week. We started our week by sailing into a fiord and seeing beautiful glaciers. Although there were many, we photographed the two main glaciers for the blog: Amalia and Bruggen. That day was cold, rainy, and windy but did clear up for awhile for us to see the spectacular vistas. We had a specialist explain each glacier and we were served the best hot cocoa EVER! Then the ship dropped a tender so that the crew could retreave a piece of ice from Amalia to carve for a restaurant display. So much fun watching them do this and then saying "they are crazy". Love this crew.

The next day was awesome. We took a catamaran out to Magdalena Island to see the Magellanic Penguins and Kelp Gulls.  The penguins are so cute and the gulls so loud. It is like each of them is trying to see who can sing the loudest. I think the gulls have them beat but then the gulls sound like they are laughing. The nature guide was just so knowledgeable and answered any and all questions. The day was windy and cool but beginning to rain when we left. The poor afternoon group got soaked. Even had Kathy take our picture to prove we were actually there.

The next day we sailed for Cape Horn but had to stop at Ushuaia, Argentina, for final refueling. The weather cleared and the wind eased up so around the Cape we went. Again, we had an expert explain what we were seeing. The two days prior the wind was around 65mph so we lucked out. The place is so barren and the wind is constantly strong that a monument of a Great Albatross has been bent over as well as all the trees.
