Week 10 Mindelo, Cape Verde Islands and Days at Sea on the Viking Star

Image
Week 10 Mindelo, Sao Vicente, Cape Verde Islands We visited Mindelo, a former colonial land held by Portugal until the 1990s when they won their independence. Thursday February 24th, after 9 days at sea from Montevideo, Uruguay, we arrived at Sao Vincente, Cape Verde Islands. This was followed by three more days at sea. We will arrive in Funchal, Maderia Islands on this coming Monday the 28th. As I stated in the last entry, we have so many things to do on the ship that sea days are not boring. After the pictures of Mindelo, I will add more pictures of the Viking Star. Since Europe is strict on vaccinations and boosters, Viking paid to have a medical team come on the ship to issue boosters to all crew and passengers who had boosters prior to November 1. While in Mindelo, we received our 2nd booster and will receive EU cards and QRs for entry into all of the EU nations. Most of us qualified, so over 300 passengers and over 100 crew were boosted. It is so great that Viking is looking our

After leaving Montevideo we set sail for Cape Verde Islands. We will arrive in Mindelo, Sao Vicente Island after 9 days at sea (Feb. 24, 2022). We were kept very busy with a variety of lectures, craft time, movies, a county fair, ship tours, live music every evening, and anything else one could think of doing. There were plenty of wine tastings and contests such as corn hole and trivia (Remember it's only a Game). Plus a variety of themed meals with decorations and tasty drinks. There were days that included more things we wanted to do but not enough time. We did take time to relax as well.  I decided this week was the perfect time to highlight this beautiful ship.  We generally start our days with a trip to the fitness center where we use the treadmills and the weight resistance equipment. It is a wonderful place to workout and to keep in shape.  Of course, we had to have breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday. There are a variety of places to eat. The  Restaurant serves all three

Week 8 Montevideo and then Across the Atlantic Ocean

We arrived in Montevideo on Sunday the 13th and took the morning excursion This was the included tour of the city. We visited Montevideo about 20 years ago and we were not impressed. We felt it was dirty, unsafe, and just plain yucky. WOW what a difference. We saw a very clean city, still some graffiti but nothing like Valparaiso.  The beautiful parks, old architecture, and beautiful modern buildings were nice to see. The people were out walking the city as it was a Sunday and there were some at the beaches. This day was a little cool with off and on sprinkles. The government is a stable democracy and the varied Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, African, and indigenous cultures combine gives it an international flare. It is a city that is worth exploring. Below are pictures we took of an unexpected extra day in Montevideo. The weather at our next stop was really windy and rainy. At Punta del Este we were to take tenders onto the islands but it was too dangerous to have them run with the hi
